FREE WEBINAR: Paving The Way Through Paid Internships
Presented by: Kathryn Anne Edwards and Alexander Hertel-Fernandez, Economic Policy Institute
Tuesday, May 4, 2010. 1:00pm - 2:00pm EST
| About The Program |
Internships, once a rare bonus for students, have become a standard component of a college graduate's resume. Despite their near universality and their necessity for students entering the job market, the majority of internships at non-profits and in government are unpaid, putting many low- and middle-income students at a considerable disadvantage. The presenters will discuss these topics and propose a potential solution with a new federal aid program for low-income students who pursue internships in public service organizations (non-profits or government agencies). A full description of the policy proposal is available here: http://www.epi.org/publications/entry/paid_internships/ The presenters will also discuss the legal framework currently governing internships and propose new regulations to ensure that interns receive the same protections as regular workers.
Program Outline:
- The economic barrier to internships and how internships interact with financial aid
- Design and implementation of the Student Opportunity Program
- Alternative policies
- Initial estimates for funding and enrollment and revenue sources
- Complementary policies
- The legal protections for interns
- The stake of the higher education community in internship reform
