Did you know that two of the largest gaps in internship programming are lack
of proper intern orientation and inefficient mentor training?
Intern Orientation: Reduces the amount of time it takes the intern to become productive
The purpose of the intern orientation is to ensure the intern feels welcome, becomes familiar with the facility and has an opportunity to meet the people they will be interacting with over the summer. This is vital because a well planned first day will help ensure the intern has a positive impression of the organization and provides good feedback to their peers. The orientation also plays a large role in reducing the amount of time it takes to become immersed in their project. With most internship only lasting 12 weeks it is important that the intern feels part of the team as soon as possible.
Mentor Training: Mentors play a vital role in the interns development and the quality of the completed project
The purpose of the mentor training is to ensure the mentor understands the vital role they play in determining the success of the intern. The mentor is the first point of contact for the intern throughout the summer. They will provide an avenue in which the intern can ask questions about their project and the organization. The mentor will also assist in the professional development of the intern and is responsible for evaluating the intern.
In this session you will learn how to select a mentor and prepare them to successfully interact with the intern to maximize productivity and enhance the interns experience.
